Irene Therapy has been treating and seeing learners from Cornwall Hill College since 1998. After our years of working together and the teachers witnessing the benefits of OT in the children we treated, the school approached us and offered us a classroom to rent.
We set up an Ayres Sensory Integration satellite practice at school in February 2009. The children peeping through the windows refer to the practice as the "monkey ROOM" with all the suspension equipment and swings hanging from the roof.
A sound working relationship has been established and we are privileged to be part of their dynamic group of teachers at the school. The advantage of having the practice at school is that we can observe children working in class and can help implement sensory strategies in the classroom. We are seeing children from Gr.000 (4 years) to Gr.3 (9 years) and PLAY an important role in school readiness for the Grade 0 children.
We have been blessed to move into a newly renovated 'state of the art' therapy practice in June 2023.
The practice is equipped with engineer designed, steel beams and frames for our suspension equipment.
We have natural light and it is an awesome space to work in.
We have two offices for assessment, fine motor work and parent feedback sessions.
The children love the new space with the variety of swings, sensory spaces and motor challenges.
The OT's working at the Cornwall Practice is Anja vd Merwe (head therapist), Anneke Kruger, Elsje Froneman and Nadine van Schalkwyk.
Training at school
At school we work closely with the teachers and we regularly do workshops for the pre-school teachers.
We recently did a workshop to help them to understand sensory regulation and to create sensory-smart classrooms. We see the benefit for the kids when the teachers implement these strategies in the classrooms.
After we moved into our new therapy rooms at school we did a crash course about our treatment techniques using the Fidelity Measure principles. This way the teachers could understand what we do in our sessions and get a glimpse into the magic of sensory integration.
